For Ages 8 - 10 (Intermediate Readers, Deeper Academic + Problem Solving & Critical Thinking)

Blacks-In Book Club for ages 8 - 10 challenges and enriches readers through more complex, diverse texts by Black authors, while developing higher order thinking, academic skills, and problem solving. Highlights include:

  1. Reading fiction, nonfiction, biography, history, science, fantasy etc., with assigned reading or
    guided reading as needed.
  2. Critical thinking: analyzing themes, author’s purpose, inferring meaning, comparing
perspectives, evaluating character decisions and motivations.
  3. Problem solving: exploring conflicts in stories, ethical dilemmas, “what would you do?” type
discussions; designing solutions or imagining alternate plot paths; using logic to understand
    cause & effect.
  4. Academic skills: expanding vocabulary, summarizing, making connections (text-to-text, text-to-self,
text-to-world), structuring thoughts clearly in discussion & writing.
  5. Reflective tasks: writing or presenting reflections, alternate endings, debate, creative projects
    tied to the content.
  6. Encouragement of reasoning and evidence: supporting opinions with quotes or examples from
    the book, considering opposing viewpoints.
